Charts for a third of the planet!!

Under two months to go before we move aboard, and in the post on Friday was another Navionics chart. My collection of electronic charts now covers nearly all of the Pacific Ocean. I now have charts of Australia, New Zealand, South America, North America, China, and the Pacific Islands. I’m only missing the area from Canada to Russia, but if we want to go that far north I’ll buy some when we get there! The Pacific covers about 46% of the Earth’s water surface and about one-third of its total surface area, making it larger than all of the Earth’s land area combined.

Apart from the Australian chart, the others have all been ebay purchases as they are reasonably expensive if purchased retail. I figure that islands and continents don’t tend to move too much.

These are all CompactFlash cards, which slot straight into the Raymarine C80 chartplotter on board, as well as the PC via a Raymarine Multicard Reader, and a backup handheld RC400 GPS.

I have the cards stored in a special ‘Pelican’ brand case. It is IPX4 rated and stores six cards.

In the last week we have sold another two large items of furniture (the pool table and a sideboard) so the pile of stuff to get rid of is getting smaller and smaller.
